Royal Docks in WW2

The Royal Docks were heavily targeted during the Second World War as their warehouses, railways and factories were critical to Britain’s war effort.

It is estimated that 25,000 tonnes of ordnance fell on the docklands. Amazingly the Royal Docks remained open, although they handled less shipping. They even played an important role in preparation for the Normandy landings as the portable harbours were constructed here in secret.
