London Cable Car
The London Cable Car is the UK’s first urban cable car, stretching 1.1km across the Thames at heights of up to 90 metres.
Transport for London developed the crossing to link Greenwich Peninsula with the north bank of the Thames, specifically the Royal Docks. Architects Wilkinson Eyre designed the Cable Car, and it was opened on 28 June 2012, about a month before the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The cable and gondolas are supported by three towers, the largest – The South Tower – is made of around 6,500 steel pieces and weighs around 570 tonnes. That’s equivalent to the weight of five blue whales.
Please note: London Cable Car was formerly branded as the Emirates Air Line
